dog park shenanigans
Jan. 31st, 2019 04:05 pmEven though the dogs had each other to socialize with, and even though there were plenty of places for them to run around on the farm, Gannicus saw some value in bringing them into the city to play at the dog park. First, it exposed them to other dogs, reinforced good manners (as Krem said), and let Gannicus intervene in any bad habits before they could get worse. That, and it gave Gannicus a chance to socialize, if other owners were willing.
At the moment, there was snow on the ground. Aster, Bran and Foha were all wearing winter gear of some kind or another. Aster, in particular, was in a ridiculous sweater, as he was the only dog that would tolerate them and Gannicus and Aggie amused themselves by buying them. The two former fighting dogs were in more dignified blankets.
Aster bolted around the park, apparently intent on annoying every dog present at least once. He bowled over a rather hefty looking bulldog and then turned a dime to go back and try to greet his victim. Gannicus was already on his way over, just in case, the bulldog, rightly, was not amused.

Mar. 30th, 2018 03:36 pmWork started early.
Gannicus didn't have a problem with early mornings, but sometimes they had a problem with him. Especially if he'd been drinking the night before... and he was almost always drinking the night before. But this morning had not been awful, and their small farm was developing into something more substantial now that there was actual livestock. Tending the sheep before coming here somehow made him almost chipper.
Or at least, he didn't object so much when his boss had him work the front counter after a few hours of actual butchering. At least now the technology and customs were not so alien to him, and he could get along well with most customers. And he had a mug of coffee tucked behind the register that he revisited often as he restocked the display counter.
He glanced up when the bell over the door rang.
"Good morning."

Mar. 29th, 2018 11:05 amSomeone at the vet's office gave him the girl's number. He'd been told that she was one of the people that helped Bran and Foha when he brought them in, starved and bloodied. He hadn't had the chance to meet her when he picked the dogs up again.
Daine, she was called.
He ended up leaving a message on her phone, giving his name, the relation he had to the dogs in his care, and asked if she would be willing to visit their farm. He'd been told she was exceedingly good with animals, and whether Gannicus liked to admit it or not, he realized he might need just a bit of help. He was relieved to get a call back, and gave her the address.
Their homestead had come a long way from when they first bought it; the family had changed as well. There were still touches of Hild all over, even if she no longer lived with them, or in Darrow at all. He wanted to find some more permanent way to mark her presence... He would think of something.
He awaited the girl on the stone fence between the pastures and the road; there was another, sturdy wooden fence behind that, already lined with sheep wire. At his feet were three dogs: Foha and Bran, the fighting dogs Daine had likely met before, and Aster.

something just like this
Sep. 21st, 2017 05:48 pmGannicus pushed his hair back and worked it into a braid. He'd forgotten anything to tie it back with but he wasn't inclined to go back to the house just to find something. The braid would hold a while, and when it gave out he would braid it again. Maybe he would find a long lost piece of baling twine if he was lucky.
Aster and Bran were out and about with him; they had spent the day roaming the property and working on the barn. It was his day off; he knew to expect Krem home before Hild based on the notes left on the counter. Aster was sniffing at rodent holes but Bran was laying in a puddle of sun.
By now he'd patched all of the gaps in the wall of the barn; the sun was coming in through the open windows. They could be pulled closed and latched at will, but airing the building out still seemed a good idea, at least until the weather turned.
Most of his work today had been making sure the loft was sturdy, repairing gaps and structural issues up there so that they might store hay when they had livestock. Gannicus had never imagined a settled life like this for himself, not after the Romans took him. But this was what he might have had if not for that. Perhaps not a house as large or land like this, but a quiet home and a herd of to keep.
Aster rushed by him. Gannicus turned and he smiled when he saw Krem standing in the doorway of the barn.

Sep. 13th, 2017 07:26 pmGannicus had dedicated most of his time outside of work to getting the property in better order. There were good fences, but some parts needed mending. The large barn had needed some repair to keep out drafts and to make it live-able and safe for whatever livestock they might decide to keep.
He also had plans for smaller out-buildings. Maybe a green house for Hild, perhaps a place for chickens if any of them felt up to keeping them. Gannicus was more interested in sheep: he knew them better, had spent most of his childhood tending a flock.
There had been a time when he had never been able to imagine a settled life for himself. He had been so certain the arena would take him, and when he survived that, the memories of his years there and of the people he lost haunted him. He had no family left where he came from, so he had stayed in Rome, working enough that he could keep himself in wine and company.
Everything was different now.
He had spent a good part of the morning working outside and when he came in he found a message on his phone. He stood in the kitchen for a long moment, reading it carefully. Thanks to Dorian he had the skill to work with at all, but comprehension had come slowly, and he practiced every day.

lost brother [May 12]
Jun. 29th, 2017 05:01 pmGannicus hadn't seen or heard from Agron in over a week. The first few days had passed by without thought, but after that the absence became noticeable. He had heard rumor of people disappearing from this city as suddenly as they came and the thought troubled him enough that he found his way to the house Steve and Agron now shared. Perhaps there was little love lost between them more often than not, but Agron was a brother. He was the one person in this place that had some idea of where Gannicus had come from, of what he had experienced.
The thought of losing him made him feel adrift.
It was mid-day; he'd gotten off of work not long ago and there was a chance Agron wasn't even at home, but where else would he be? He knocked heavily at the door, his frown lingering.

A home for three
May. 24th, 2017 01:00 pmGannicus stepped out of the car they hired and stretched. It wasn't a long trip from the city proper, but he was used to walking everywhere. It occurred to him that if they were going to make a go at living out here, at least one of them might need to learn to drive.
If he was honest with himself, the prospect was promising.
They'd all been speaking with realtors and searching for properties that would suit them: the house had to be large enough so that the three of them did not feel on top of each other, unless they wanted to be, and enough to accommodate guests. Land for growing and for animals, and preferably at least one out building already existing. Gannicus was certain they could build other things as they needed to, but having a place to start would help.
This was one of the more promising properties, as it already had at least one fenced pasture and a barn.
Gannicus stood at the edge of the driveway, waiting for his partners. They had permission to go exploring, as the house was unoccupied at the moment.

Giving Rings [backdated: December 25th]
Jan. 1st, 2017 09:21 pmGannicus knew the holiday was important to a lot of people in Darrow. It fell about the same time of year as the Roman Saturnalia and it was not far from the solstice his people had celebrated. He knew, now, that people often exchanged gifts this time of year, and he'd thought for quite some time about what he might give Krem and Hild.
His mind kept turning back toward the same thought, despite the weight it might bring. He would just have to be clear about his intentions, especially since he imagined Hild and Krem would both be familiar with what he wanted to give.
For Hild he had a lighter torc, the ends crafted into ash leaves; he also had a bracelet for her. Krem's torc had loose spirals on the ends.
He only hoped the reception went well and took a breath before he knocked on the door.

The moon, like a flower
Nov. 18th, 2016 09:22 pmGannicus sent a text to Krem, asking if he was free for the night, if he'd come over at sunset. He tended to text unless he couldn't - it forced him to practice writing. He waited outside his apartment for Krem to arrive, flashing a grin when he saw him. "We have further to go," he said, taking Krem's hand to bring him the rest of the way through the building.
They had to take an access ladder to the roof. There was a pile of blankets and a few pillows waiting there, along with a bottle of wine.
"I kept hearing tonight's moon is special. I thought... we could watch it." He was still holding Krem's hand as he said it, almost shy in confessing his plan. His thumb brushed across Krem's.

Sep. 17th, 2016 12:32 amKrem had been a dangerous distraction and a delicious sort of motivation all night. Gannicus came to fight: he was good at it, and he reveled in it, and for a few moments at a time he could forget all his confusion and sink into something so deeply familiar.
It didn't hurt that he'd done some drinking before even showing up to the gathering.
They watched each other all night, sharing in triumph or defeat. And at least once they'd fought each other - though Gannicus could hardly call it that anymore. They had wrestled, and it had nearly turned into something else right there in their chosen arena. But they parted, drew out the moment, the excitement of watching each other.
So when Krem caught him after a victorious bout, Gannicus went with him, eager. He grinned, bright and a bit bloody, and pressed hard into a kiss. His lip was split but that hardly cooled his passion.

Sep. 11th, 2016 12:32 amWork started early.
Gannicus didn't have a problem with early mornings, but sometimes they had a problem with him. Especially if he'd been drinking the night before... and he was almost always drinking the night before. His boss informed him a day or so ago that he'd hired someone new and they - she would be in this morning.
Whatever he was expecting, she was... short. With hair that reminded him of home. Despite his generally congenial nature, Gannicus couldn't muster an actual smile. His head still throbbed, though with the water he'd been pounding back it was starting to ease.
"I am not much for mornings," he confessed as he pulled his hair back. They had a fresh shipment that needed to be cut and portioned for the day's sales. It was early.

"I am not much for mornings," he confessed as he pulled his hair back. They had a fresh shipment that needed to be cut and portioned for the day's sales. It was early.

Aug. 6th, 2016 10:45 amGannicus has been excited since the beach, for, he felt, obvious reasons. He stayed close to Krem for the walk back to his apartment, not minding it at all. It was an excuse for more touching, more teasing: for building anticipation.
It had been a long time since he'd enjoyed penetration or even had thought toward it. Under Batiatus's roof he had endured many things against his will, but thankfully, rarely, that.
With Krem it was different. He wanted him, and trusted him, and desire did not fade at the thought that Krem wanted to be inside of him. If anything, it swelled. When they got to Krem's door he crowded behind him, not at all helpful as he tried to unlock it.

Solstice Night
Jun. 27th, 2016 02:26 amGannicus lifted an eyebrow at the people propositioning them. He still had one hand holding Krem's jaw - he'd been kissing him and quite content to do so when someone had cleared their voice at him. His other hand may or may not have been firmly planted on Krem's ass.
He was only momentarily annoyed to be interrupted before realizing exactly what they wanted. A man and woman, as far as he could tell, both offering interest, asking if he and Krem would like to join them. He couldn't tell if they were a couple and he wondered if it even mattered.
He brushed his thumb over Krem's cheek and looked at him.
"What do you think?" He nodded towards them as he asked but kept his eyes on Krem.

State of my head
Apr. 9th, 2016 03:18 pmGannicus knows that there are better ways to deal with stress, but he finds none so comforting as the ones he's accustomed to: drink, poor choices, fighting. After hearing of Porthos's returned memories, he dwells on some of his own. He doesn't like dwelling on memories, or much of anything if he can help it.
Thinking of Melitta, of Oenomaus, of Saxa and Sybil and all of his brothers. Nothing good came of that, and yet he could not push memories from mind. So he found distraction.
That distraction leaves him bruised and bleeding, but the other guy looked worse off at the end of it. Still, he'd felt his shoulder pop in a way it shouldn't toward the end of the fight, and though he is almost certain he could fix it on his own, perhaps it would be better to seek more experienced medical attention. Though Porthos could likely help, his mind turns toward another, likely closer.
He finds his way to Candlewood by memory - perhaps impressive, considering the last time he'd been there he'd had a head injury. The day is cold and snow blowing, but he did not the drive to put his coat back on - to do so would mean moving his shoulder more than he was willing to at the moment. It is one thing to push a body past reason in a fight to the death, but the contest had been for catharsis, and now that it was over he sees no need to push the joint beyond capacity.
Gannicus follows someone in, pausing to try to remember how many flights of steps they had gone up, where the door had been. Well, if he made a mistake he could recover. Surely no one here would have a lethal reaction to a knock at the wrong door.
He finds the one he remembers to be Hild's and knocks, hoping she is home.
